Weekend anatomy & gestures

I’ve been wanting to get back to my anatomy book, so I did this drawing of a right radius & ulna (from in front on the left, from in back on the right) on Sunday.  It looks like I haven’t done any anatomy in about a month!  That’s hard for me to believe – but it looks like I mostly focused on Andrew Loomis stuff in March.  That sort of counts as anatomy, I think.

I also did some gesture drawings over the weekend.  Can’t exactly remember when each of these were done, but I did some drawing on both Saturday & Sunday.  Here’s what I think I did on Saturday:

I also watched some Proko videos on gesture drawing – not sure if it helped, but I think I might have a better idea on how to go about it.  It’s just the execution of that knowledge that’s a bit tricky!  But I feel like when I warm up, things start to improve.

Here’s what I did on Sunday:

Aaand, that’s that.  I think Sunday went a little better.  I’m going to keep doing these as often as possible, in addition to other drawings.  At the very least, when I don’t have a lot of time to draw on some days, I know I can work on gesture drawings.

In other news: a bunch of you are doing the “draw everyday” thing, which is so great – I haven’t really been doing that, but I’ve decided to give it a go in the month of April.  I can’t guarantee a post everyday if I don’t have access to a scanner, but I will try my best to draw something everyday & post the results when I’m able to.  I’m also attempting to do the same thing with writing music – not that I’ll post the results here, but now that I’ve said it publicly, I’ll feel more accountable to actually do it.

  1. These gesture drawings are really coming along! I’m doing an everyday drawing challenge but don’t necessarily post everyday on my blog (though I try to on instagram). Sometimes I feel like it ends up being too much admin of editing photos/creating posts that takes away from the actual experience of drawing. But keep it up, I look forward to see how you do in April.

    • Thanks!

Yeah, I know what you mean – I’m trying to do at least 30 minutes a day of drawing, but often more, & all the extra stuff that comes from having the blog takes up time! It’s fun, though, & I’m not sure I’d be as motivated if I wasn’t doing it here – it’s like a project, & projects are really good for me.

  2. I really love your Sunday gestures. All of them look great really but the ones from Sunday look particularly smooth and solid.

I really need to try to do more gesture drawings myself. They still seem a bit scary to me.
